Senators condemn killing of university president in Cagayan de Oro City


SENATORS from both the majority and minority blocs on Sunday condemned the killing of the president of the Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (Pasuc) as they urged the Philippine National Police (PNP) to immediately arrest the unmask the perpetrators.

Senate President Aquilino Pimentel 3rd and Sen. Francis Escudero expressed alarm over the killing of Ricardo Rotoras, who is also the president of the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines.

“I am alarmed and outraged by this latest attack on our law abiding and dedicated public servants. I urge the police to work double time to arrest the killers and unmask the mastermind,” said Pimentel in a statement.

Escudero for his part said that the incident was unacceptable and enraging considering that the attack was done against a member of the academic community.

“His untimely passing is a great loss not only to his family, friends and colleagues, but to the whole higher education sector as well,“ said Escudero, who heads the Senate Committee on Education, Arts and Culture.

Rotoras, was shot by unidentified assailants early Saturday morning outside his house at Golden Glow North Subdivision in Barangay Carmen in Cagayan de Oro City.

According to police, the 48-year-old victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was rushed to the JR Borja General Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

Liberal Party senators Francis Pangilinan and Paolo Benigno Aquino 4th also condemned the senseless killing of Rotoras who, according to them, contributed to the passage of Quality Tertiary Education Act.

As president of Pasuc, the senators said, Rotoras worked closely with them in crafting the law providing free tuition for students of 112 state universities and colleges (SUCs).

“His untimely death is a great loss to the country’s push for quality education for every Filipino,” the LP senators added.

They called on the PNP and all law enforcement agencies to leave no stone unturned to ensure that those behind the killing be brought to justice and punished for their deplorable act. JEFFERSON ANTIPORDA
