Filipino-German Marc Sieber settled for the runner-up honors this time in the 2016 Turkey Futures 18 – Tennis Organization Cup held at the Belconti Resort Tennis Courts in Antalya, Turkey.
The 28-year-old Sieber failed to sustain his impressive run in Turkey as he succumbed to top seed Dennis Novak of Austria in the singles final round, 2-6, 2-6.
The road to the final was not easy for Sieber.
He needed an extra set in beating Japanese Katsuki Nagao in the quarterfinals, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, before posting a 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 come-from-behind win over Hugo Nys of France in the semifinals.
Sieber also defeated Gustavo Guerses of Brazil in the first round, 6-0, 6-1, and Keisuke Numajiri of Japan in the second round, 6-0, 6-2.
In doubles, Sieber and German partner Christoph Negritu suffered a 2-6, 2-6 loss to Hugo and Mikelis Libietis of Latvia in the semifinals of the Futures tournament sanctioned by the International Tennis Federation.
Sieber and Negritu reached the Final Four by ousting Brazilians Marcelo Tebet and Fernando Yamacita in the opening round, 6-1, 7-6 (7), and Turkey bets Muhammet Haylaz and Anil Yuksel in the quarterfinals, 3-6, 7-5, 10-5.
Sieber won three consecutive singles titles in Turkey – the ITF Futures 14, 15 and 17 – and one doubles crown with Negritu in the ITF Futures 17.
Sieber, whose mother was hailed in Cagayan de Oro City, will be competing next in the ITF Turkey Futures 19 also in Antalya.
Meanwhile, Filipino-American Treat Huey and Belarusian Max Mirnyi failed to progress in the ATP World Tour Masters – Internationali BNL D’Italia after absorbing a 6-7 (6), 4-6 defeat against eighth seeds Canadian Vasek Pospisil and American Jack Sock.
