Skipper, Coast Guard personnel charged for Ormoc sea mishap

Ormoc City: Two Coast Guard personnel and the captain of M/B Nirvana-B have been charged with reckless imprudence resulting to multiple murder on Thursday.

Investigating Prosecutor Erwin James Fabriga issued the resolution on Wednesday for the filing of cases at the Regional Trial Court in Ormoc City against motorbanca Nirvana-B Skipper Warren Lapara Oleverio, SN2 Jonas Valdez, ASN Joseph Cancilao Blanco 2nd.

Fabriga, however, has ordered the release of vessel owner Joge Bong Zarco and 17 other crew members of the ill-fated boat.

There were 28 affidavits filed by the relatives of the 63 fatalities of the ill-fated passenger vessel against the crew of M/B Nirvana-B that sunk off Ormoc Bay last July 2.

Zarco, in an interview, said he welcomed the decision because the prosecutor saw the incident was an accident. He added that he would help the victims process their insurance claims as well as Oleverio.

The vessel owner, however, would not comment on the charges against the clearing officers of the Philippine Coast Guard.

The 18 individuals were released from detention at the Police Station 1 past 6 in the evening last night after posting a P10,000-bail. The ship captain is still detained.
