Jonas Sultan’s trainer Edito Villamor said if his ward beats compatriot Johnriel Casimero on September 16 in their International Boxing Federation (IBF) super flyweight title eliminator bout, it will open for greater opportunities for Sultan.
“If he beats Casimero, it’s going to be sky’s the limit for Sultan. There will be more opportunities for him like world title fights. The boxing world will notice him,” Villamor told The Manila Times in a phone interview on Sunday.
That’s why the 25-year-old fighter from Cebu is now training seriously for this upcoming fight to be held in Waterfront Hotel and Casino in Cebu.
“Sultan’s knockout punch is there but we need to polish his skills and movement. He (Sultan) is really excited when he learned this development that’s why he’s working on his conditioning very hard,” the trainer added.
Villamor said Sultan (13-3 win-loss record with nine knockouts) knows that the former IBF flyweight champion Casimero (24-3 record with 15 knockouts) is an experienced fighter who fought outside the country many times.
The winner of the IBF title eliminator bout will face reigning super flyweight champion Jerwin Ancajas, who successfully retained the belt last July 2 via seventh round technical knockout win over Japanese foe Teiru Kinoshita in Brisbane, Australia.
“Aside from the IBF, Sultan could also get opportunities from other organizations like the WBO (World Boxing Organization), WBC (World Boxing Council) and World Boxing Association (WBA) if he’s going to win against Casimero,” said Villamor.
Sultan has won his last four fights all by knockout wins, the latest against fellow Filipino and former WBC flyweight champion Sonny Boy Jaro last May 7 in Angono, Rizal.
