SM introduces contactless payment card

The SM Group launched its newest product, the e-PLUS Tap to Pay smart card, at the SMX function room, SM Aura Premiere Mall at Fort Bonifacio in Taguig City on Monday.

“It can be used as a loyalty card, a sales tool and a discount card for convenience, so shoppers can also maximize their brand mileage. With every use of the e-PLUS Tap to Pay card, customers can accumulate points and can redeem items featured at the time,” said Sahara Garnica, business unit head of e-PLUS Tap to Pay system.

The advantage of having the card is it offers the convenience of covering all a shopper’s daily financial needs. It is just like the stored value cards sold in train stations; but the difference is that it can be used in SM outlets such as: SM cinemas, SM entertainment and activity centers, SM parking, select SM passenger terminals with UV Express shuttles and other partner establishments nationwide.

SM has also partnered with other merchants, like the Belo Medical Group, Great Image Photography, Burger King, Papa John’s, Karate Kid, Tempura, Lenovo and Villman Electronic Store, where customers can avail special offers and discounts just by a tap of a card.

But the stored-value based contactless card does not offer payment of utility bills, bank statements or telecom dues.

The e-PLUS Tap to Pay card is now available in SM cinema branches nationwide and can be reloaded in designated reloading centers and vending machines in SM malls, and also through BDO online banking and ATMs with no maximum limit of reloaded amount.

However, since the stored value card works like cash, customers must keep it safe like cash. Once it is lost, it would take SM’s customer care 24 hours to deactivate the card.

The SM Group has partnered with Hong Kong-based Advance Card System for the system, and while it still on its infancy stage, SM promises that the e-PLUS Tap to Pay card “will be used to pay for everything in the future,” said Garnica.
