Smart Communications Inc. has announced affordable packages for consumers, who want to shift from using Wifi to video streaming on their mobile phones, which is more convenient.
First President and Head for Data Services Michele Curran said the packages start with You Tube 5, which offers 65 megabytes of data for 15 minutes video streaming on mobile phones, valued for one day, for only P5.
“We feel that we are tapping behavior here. I mean, video access is already a behavior among consumers,” Curran told reporters.
“What they’re doing is they’re accessing it over the Wifi, and that’s what we’re trying to change. We’re trying to shift them from Wifi to mobile because it’s a lot convenient when you access video anywhere, anytime,” she said.
Under its new video plans, Smart is making more accessible to Filipinos YouTube, Vimeo and other online video services. Smart subscribers can also watch Dailymotion, Viewstream, Skype Qik and Dubsmash on their mobile phones wherever and whenever they want.
The affordable packages also include YouTube25, which offers
160MB of data for 35 minutes of video streaming, valid for one day for only P25; and YouTube50, which offers 400MB of data for 90 minutes video streaming, valid over 3 days for only P50.
For greater value-for-money, Smart offers YouTube199, which provides 270 minutes of video streaming, valid over 30 days, for only P199.
Once the subscribers video data bundle subscription is consumed, Smart prepaid subscribers will be directed to a paywall or receive a notification in order to allow customers to manage their budget and service usage.
Smart’s parent company, Philippine long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT), said its data and broadband services has replaced the traditional and legacy sources of revenues.
PLDT and Smart President and Chief Executive Officer Napoleon Nazareno said the changes indicate an “on-going evolution of the telco subscribers into digital customers.”
“There’s a need for PLDT Group to undertake customer centric changes … to identify new ways of serving the customers,” Nazareno said.
Curran said the new affordable package plans would help Smart’s mobile data double-digit growth “because this is untapped behavior that we are actually going for.”
For postpaid user, upon registration, subscribers will get instant notification of their subscription, which shall be billed on top of their monthly service fee.
Smart expects the new offers to drive even greater mobile data usage among Filipinos, who use mobile Internet services to enrich their lifestyle.
This trend is reflected in the network’s recent announcement that it grew mobile data revenues by 63 percent to P8.1 billion in 2014, a huge increase from P5 billion in 2013.
Mobile Internet usage also continued to grow strongly, with mobile Internet revenues increasing by 19 percent to P2.2 billion in the first quarter of 2015 from P1.9 billion for the same period in 2014.
“Actually, there’s a big market for this kind of services. It has become a barrier for usage, so we’re looking at tapping a sizeable market for this service,” Curran said.
