• Smart posts growth in postpaid segment

    Smart Communication Inc. said on Thursday that its postpaid subscriber base grew by 24 percent in the first three months of 2013 versus the same period last year.

    The company said that to help sustain its strong start in 2013, Smart is launching a new set of postpaid offer called Flexibundles, which aims to give postpaid subscribers better control of their usage through a simple process.

    Smart explained that its Fluxibundles give its postpaid subscribers greater control over their plans, enabling them to design their plans to suit their specific needs. Smart added almost 84,000 new postpaid users in the first quarter of 2013, up 24 percent from the same period last year. The company postpaid base also grew 12 percent from the last quarter of 2012.

    This brought the number of Smart Postpaid subscribers to almost 800,000 million, and help push the total Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) mobile postpaid base to 2.1 million, including Sun Cellular postpaid subscribers—or 53 percent of the total postpaid market.

    PLDT also reported a year-on-year increase of 12 percent in its postpaid revenues from Smart and Sun, helping push its consolidated wireless service revenues to P28.5 billion.

    The company said that aggressive acquisition via handset bundling increased mobile Internet revenues by 42 percent year-on-year to P1 billion in the first quarter of 2013.
