• Smart widens digital services reach in 2015


    SMART Communications, the wireless unit of telecom leader Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT), is closing the year with a wider digital service reach.

    Smart, which employed a two-track approach to reach hit its aim of expanding its digital services market, saw a rapid expansion of its digital services, especially in the field of connectivity.

    “PLDT’s wireless subsidiary has been rapidly expanding its range of digital services, particularly in the fields of connectivity, entertainment, home security, urban convenience and financial services,” Smart said in a statement.

    Smart took advantage of that dynamic growth by launching smartphone, tablet and pocket Wifi offers.

    Smart launched its Share the Joy Gadget Giveaway promo, which offered the chance to win popular mobile devices such as the iPhone 6, iPad Mini and Air models, Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge and Pro Tab, and the GoPro camera and the Smart Bro LTE pocket WiFi. This followed Smart’s successful offer of the new iPhone models in November.

    “Filipinos love to communicate, which is why texting and calling have been such popular ways of reaching out to our loved ones wherever they are,” remarked Ariel Fermin, executive vice president and head of Consumer Business at Smart.

    “But as more Filipinos experience what the ‘Smart Life’ could offer, many discover that they can unlock the power of their smart devices through various apps and services weaved into an unrivaled digital experience only Smart can provide,” Fermin said.

    Smart also introduced a series of new digital services made possible through several key partnerships, such as those with leading video content providers iflix and FOX, for seamless and uninterrupted movie and TV streaming even on the go.

    The communications company recently renewed its partnership with MCA Music Inc., a Universal Music Group International (UMGI) company, to provide even more digital experiences to cater to its music-loving market through its music service SPINNR.

    Smart likewise entered into a multi-year collaboration with The Walt Disney Co. Southeast Asia, through its interactive entertainment arm Disney Interactive, to bring digital content offerings to users in the country.

    To provide convenient transportation and traveling services to subscribers, Smart also signed exclusive tie-ups with Uber, the world’s most popular ride-sharing service, and most recently with Airbnb, the world’s leading community-driven hospitality company.

    Smart said it contributed to a 139-percent growth in data traffic, which has led to a combined broadband and mobile internet revenues of as much as P15.6 billion for the first nine months of 2015.
