SMC SUSPENDS PENALTIES ON UNPAID ALECO BILLS

LEGAZPI CITY: The San Miguel Corp. (SMC) has suspended penalties for unpaid Albay Electric Cooperative (Aleco) electric bills as it sought to resolve the labor issues and the close to P4-billion debts of the cooperative. Aleco’s 200,000 consumers have complained of undelivered electric bills since September last year due to the continuing labor strike in the cooperative and voiced fears they would be later obliged to settle their accumulated electric bills in full or face disconnection. But SMC through its newly created subsidiary Albay Power and Energy Corp (APEC) claimed it has failed to takeover Aleco completely and so it could not perform meter reading and distribution and collection of electric bills. APEC general manager Allan Marcha could not be contacted for comment but a source said SMC had already designated certain banks and establishments to receive electric bill payments.
