FILIPINO Grandmaster Wesley So lost to Russian GM Evgeny Tomashevsky, 0.5-1.5, after 23 moves of Ruy Lopez opening in the second game of their two-match standard play in the 2013 World Chess Cup at the Scandic Hotel in Tromso, Norway on Thursday.
So, the No. 33 seed, was beaten by the No. 32 Tomashevsky on Wednesday in their first game where the Russian won after 51 moves of Grunfeld Defense, Prins Variation, using the disadvantageous black pieces
Tomashevsky advanced to Round 3 to battle the winner between top seed GM Levon Aronian (ELO 2813) of Armenia and GM Igor Lysyj (ELO 2656) of Russia.
So previously beat GM Alexander Ipatov of Turkey, 1.5-0.5, to arrange a Round 2 encounter with Tomashevsky.
