Filipino Grandmaster Wesley So drew his first round match with Emil Sotuvsky of Israel in 23 moves of a Benoni Defense at the start of the ACP Golden Classic chess in Bergamo, Italy.
All games in the seven-man single-round-robin tournament ended in draws.
Zoltan Almasi of Hungary halved the point with Ian Nepomniactchi of Russia, while Baadun Jobava of Georgia settled for a draw with Sabino Brunello of Italy. Daniele Vocaturo of Italy took a bye.
So will face Nepomniactchi in the second round. Sutovsky takes on Jobava, while Vocaturo will test the mettle of Almasi.
The category 19tournament will not be rated by FIDE, the world chess governing body, since it does not follow the normal rules of play.
The tournament is bringing back adjournment, which went out of fashion with the introduction of computers two decades ago. Before the internet invasion, players used to seal their moves after seven hours of play, go back home, analyze the game even with the help of friends, come back the next day and resume play.
