• So drops to No.4 after a draw in Tata Steel tilt


    Filipino Grandmaster (GM) Wesley So scored another draw in the sixth round of the prestigious 2016 Tata Steel Chess Tournament being held in Wijk aan Zee in Netherlands.

    So agreed to a draw this time with GM Fabiano Caruana of US but it wasn’t good enough as the Filipino woodpusher fell to fourth spot with 3.5 points.

    Caruana, GM Ding Liren of China and GM Magnus Carlsen of Norway are sharing the lead with four points each in the tournament that offers a whopping 10,000 Euros to the champion and 6,500 Euros to the runner-up.

    Ding split the point with GM David Navara of the Czech Republic while Carlsen outclassed GM Evgeny Tomashevsky of Russia in their respective six-round matches.

    So will be facing GM Wei Yi of China in the seventh round.

    The other seventh-round pairings are Caruana versus Ding, Carlsen versus GM Pavel Eljanov of Ukraine, Navara versus GM Sergey Karjakin of Russia, GM Hou Yifan of China versus GM Shakhyar Mamedyarov of Azerbaijan, GM Anish Giri of the Netherlands versus compatriot GM Loek Van Wely and GM Evgeny Tomashevsky of Russia versus GM Michael Adams of England.

    After the seventh round, So’s next opponents are Mamedyarov (eighth), Van Wely (ninth), Tomashevsky (10th), Elijanov (11th), Carlsen (12th) and Adams (13th). EMIL C. NOGUERA
