Grandmaster (GM) Wesley So finished third in the elite 2015 Gashimov Memorial in Shamkir City, Azerbaijan. The first and second places were captured by world champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway and former world champion Vishwanathan Anand of India, respectively.
So finished with five points in the single nine-man tournament. Carlsen finished with seven points while Anand had six points.
The 21-year-old Filipino registered three wins, four draws and two loses. Both Carlsen and Anand were undefeated with 5-4 and 3-6, win-draw records.
So’s performance was commendable since he played better compared to fellow grandmasters and elite players who are in the Top 10 in world ranking like Fabiano Caruana of Italy, Vladimir Kramnik of Russia, Anish Giri of the Netherlands, and Maxime Vachier-Lagrabe of France.
Caruana had five points but he lost to So and finished fourth place.
Kramnik and GM Shariyar Mamedyarov of Azerbaijan who both had four points finished fifth and sixth, respectively.
Taking the seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th place were GM Michael Adams of England, Giri, Vachier-Lagrabe, and Rauf Mamedov of Azerbaijan who all had 3.5 points.
