Filipino Grandmaster (GM) Wesley So is sharing the top spot with two other players after five rounds in the Las Vegas International Chess Festival 2013 at the Riviera Casino & Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.
So outclassed GM Tamaz Gelashvili of Georgia in the fifth round to improve his score to 4.5 points, the same score as GMs Alejandro Ramirez of Costa Rica and Manuel Leon Hoyos of Mexico.
Ramirez nipped GM Ruben Felgaer of Argentina while Hoyos shocked defending champion GM Aleksandr Lenderman of US in their fifth-round matches.
Another Filipino, GM Enrico Sevillano, is in a group of four-pointers along with Gelashvili, GM Ray Robson of US, GM Jaan Ehlvest of Estonia, GM Varuzhan Akobian of Armenia and GM Victor Mikhalevski of Israel.
Sevillano toppled American GM Conrad Holt.
At the 2013 Asean Age Group Chess Championships in Thailand, International Master Jan Emmanuel Garcia and National Master Alcon John Datu are in a three-way tie for the lead with 2.5 points in the Open Under-20 division standard chess.
Garcia and Datu drew in the third round to join FIDE Master Nguyen Van Hai of Vietnam who also has a score of 2.5 points. Nguyen defeated Tan Weiliang of Singapore.
Woman International Master (WIM) Janelle Mae Frayna and Vietnamese WIMs Hoang Thi Nhu and Vo Thi Kim Phung area leading the girls’ Under-20 class with 2.5 points each.
Frayna split the point with Hoang while Vo beat Vietnam’s Doan Thi Van Anh.
