So shares lead with 4 others in Universiade chess



Filipino Grandmaster (GM) Wesley So scored a crucial eighth-round win to force a five-way tie on top in the 27th Summer Universiade chess competitions in Kazan, Russia.

So outclassed GM Giorgi Margvelashvili of Georgia in 48 moves of the Caro Kann Advance Variation to raise his score to six points.

Also with six points are GMs Evgeny Alekseev of Russia, Li Chao of China, Zaven Andriasian of Armenia and Ma Qun of China.

Alekseev and Li agreed to a draw while Ma and Andriasian also split the point in their eight-round matches.

So will face Andriasian in the final round scheduled on Monday night,

Overall, So has four wins (against Margvelashvili, Andrey Baryshpolets of Ukraine, Marian Jurick of Slovakia and Nikita Meskovs ofLatvia) and four draws (with Ma, Jacek Tomczak of Poland, Zhou Jianchao of China and Robert Hovhannisyan of Armenia).

In swimming, Gian Daniel Berino, Sean Michael Garchitorena, Isaac Emmanuel Daylo and Ma. Claire Adorna fell short in their events.

Berino landed seventh in the men’s 200-meter freestyle, eighth in the 400m freestyle and another eighth-place finish in the men’s 50m backstroke. Garchitorena wound up sixth in the men’s 50m butterfly.

Daylo was in eighth spot in the men’s 100m breaststroke while Adorna ended up eighth in the women’s 100m backstroke. EMIL C. NOGUERA
