Filipino Grandmaster (GM) Wesley So took the solo lead after scoring a crucial third-round victory in the 2013 Unive Crown Group being held in Hoogeveen, Netherlands.
The 20-year-old So outclassed GM Robin Van Kampen of the Netherlands after 43 moves of Queen’s Gambit Declined to raise his score to 2.5 points.
So is full-point ahead of erstwhile co-leader Van Kampen, who dropped to second with 1.5 points. GMs Michael Adams and Loek Van Wely are sharing the third spot with one point apiece.
Adams and Van Wely drew their third-round match.
So will be meeting Van Wely in the fourth round using black pieces while Van Kampen battles Adams in the other game.
Meanwhile, Tagaytay City shocked No. 2 Shanghai-China, 2.5-1.5, in the fourth round to remain unscathed in the 2013 Asian Cities Chess Team Championship being held in Tagaytay City.
Tagaytay City improved to eight points while Manila City, Wuxi-China and Baghdad-Iraq are in a three-way tie for second with six points apiece followed by fifth-placers Shah-Alam-Malaysia, Ulaanbaatar-Mongolia and Shanghai-China with five points each.
Pasay City, Singapore City, Sharjah-United Arab Emirates, Colombo-Sri Lanka and Erdenet-Mongolia are in a group of four-pointers followed by Dubai-United Arab Emirates (three points), Seoul-South Korea (two points), Taipei-Taiwan (two points), Kuwait City (two points) and Bandar Seri Begawan-Brunei Darussalam (two points).
