• Soldier released by NPAs angers Duterte for possessing ‘shabu’

DAVAO CITY: Mayor Rodrigo Duterte facilitated the release on Monday of an Army corporal after 16 days of captivity by the New People’s Army (NPA) but, the mayor was irked upon learning that the soldier he fetched from an undisclosed place in Davao was found by rebels in possession of one sachet of shabu.

Corporal Rogelio Rosales was captured by the NPAs last May 3 in Barangay Florida, Kapalong, Davao del Norte while the soldier was reportedly facilitating the transport of illegal logs.

Before the release, Duterte admitted that he got irked when he was informed that a sachet of shabu was found from the soldier’s possession during his capture.

Duterte said at first he rejected fetching the soldier because of his involvement in drugs and illegal logging.

“Suko ko, mao pagtawag nila (NPA) niingon ko ihawa na ninyo. Pagtawag pod sa Army sa ako gi-ingnan pod nako sila na dili ko modawat ug sundalo nga na-involve sa illegal logging ug droga (I was angry. So when the NPA called me I told them to take him away. When the military called me, I told them I will not receive a soldier involved in illegal logging and drugs),” Duterte said.

Duterte however, decided to fetch Rosales at the personal appeal of his mother and relatives. He said they almost kneel in front of him to help secure Rosales.

“I told her not to kneel because I’m not a Saint. I’m not Sto. Rodrigo,” the mayor said in jest. It was then that he decided to again establish communications with the rebels for Rosales’ release.

According to Duterte, he also told the army officials to impose disciplinary action on Rosales for involvement in illegal activities. “Either silotan nila (they punish) or dismissed him from service. Dili sila modawat ug ingon ana (They should not accept such kind of soldier),”Duterte said. The mayor turned over Rosales to the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) at Camp Panacan, this city.

In an interview with reporters, Rosales admitted that the sachet of shabu was taken from his possession. He further admitted he started using it at a time he was depressed due to his failed marriage. Rosales has since separated from his wife. PNA
