House Deputy Minority Leader Neri Colmenares of Bayan Muna party-list has thumbed down the reported five-percent pension increase for Social Security System (SSS) pensioners.
The SSS announced that a five-percent across-the-board increase will be paid to its 1.9 million pensioners starting August 2014.
“While it is right for SSS to support our bill, its 5 percent pension increase is way below the P5,000 minimum pension we proposed in House Bill 175. That would be too small, it won’t be even enough to cover the maintenance medicines of the elderly,” Colmenares, a lawyer, argued.
“We will push the SSS to further increase the pension in the next hearing,” the solon said.
The minimum monthly pension of an SSS pensioner stands at P1,200.
