Six-foot-nine Kai Sotto will be enrolled in Ateneo De Manila University High School on Friday after passing the entrance examination recently, according to his father former Saint Francis De Assisi College star Ervin Sotto.
The elder Sotto, who also played for Purefoods, AIR21 and Alaska during the 2004 up to 2011 Philippine Basketball Association season, said they only chose the best school that has the best basketball program.
“We decided to choose the best school for Kai. Ateneo has a great basketball program and high school academics as well,” Ervin told The Manila Times on Wednesday during interview. “It is now up to Ateneo basketball program how to take care of my son.”
He also said his son could also be lined up to Ateneo high school for the Fil-Oil Flying V junior basketball next week. “It depends now with Ateneo head coach Joe Silva if he’s going to play, but right now I’m very happy of what is happening to him,” he added.
The 13-year-old Sotto, who impressed scouts due to his young towering presence, said he is ready to give his best and learn. He won the Most Valuable Player trophy in the Junior National Basketball Association (NBA) Philippines National Training Camp last week in Don Bosco in Makati City.
“I’m just here to give my best everyday,” said the younger Sotto.
Sotto, who played varsity in elementary at Saint Francis De Assisi school in Las Pinas City, said he idolized San Miguel Beer’s center June Mar Fajardo and New York Knicks Kristaps Porzingis of the NBA due to his shooting skills and being an athletic big man.
