The leading and rising junior players from Metro Manila and nearly provinces resume their chase for ranking points as they clash in the Palawan Pawnshop-Palawan Express Pera Padala Manila Southwoods leg regional age-group 2016 starting Thursday, at the Manila Southwoods Sports Club in Carmona, Cavite.
The long-running, nationwide PPS-PEPP circuit is marking its first stop at the Southwoods Sports Club with over 200 entries vying for top honors in the Group 2 tournament sponsored by Palawan Pawnshop and presented by Slazenger.
Camille So, Lila Salvacion, Megan Reyes and Amanda Zoleta banner the field in the girls’ premier 18-and-under division with Zoleta, Reyes and Salvacion also leading the 16-U cast of the six-day event sanctioned by Philta and backed by Asiatraders Corp., exclusively distributor of Slazenger.
The 14-year-old Zoleta and Salvacio are also entered in the 14-U class with the former as top seed and the latter gaining the No. 4 seeding with Julia Ignacio as No. 2 and Denise Bernardo as the third seed.
“We expect a spirited battle for top honors, this being the year’s third to last leg and everybody would want to close out the season on a winning note,” said Palawan Pawnshop president/CEO Bobby Castro, who has also lined up a bigger, busier calendar next year.
Naga City, Cebu will host the penultimate leg on December 14 to 20 for the age-group tournament with the Open set on December 17 to 21 to be held as part of the Dagitab Festival celebrations.
This year’s circuit winds up in Cainta, Rizal on December 26 to 30.
Meanwhile, PPS-PEPP will also hold a series of free tennis clinics for the junior players, starting on December 2 to 5 at Dangcagan Tennis Club, in Dangcagan, Bukidnon to be conducted by coach Bong Bangonon, then on December 29 to 30 at the Olivarez Sports Center in Sucat, Parañaque, on Jan. 2, 2017 at the Alabang Country Club, and on January 2, 2017 at the Manila Polo Club to be conducted by former Davis Cupper Mel Ampon, son of Filipino tennis legend Felicisimo Ampon. Meanwhile, Tim Gumban, Kurt Molina and Marcus del Rosario lead the boys’ 18-U cast in the Southwoods leg with the troika also clashing in the 16-U side along with Matthew Garcia, Angelo Aparte and Athan Arejola.
Marc Jarata, on the other hand, gains the top ranking in the 12- and 14-U categories while Marielle Jarata, Patrick Salvacion, Kidlat Estogero and Kean Enriquez are tipped to slug it out for the 10-unisex diadem.
