• Spanish rebel party Podemos seeks second wind

MADRID: Spain’s anti-austerity party Podemos, whose meteoric rise has upended the country’s politics, is seeking a second wind as an internal crisis over strategy hits and polls show its popularity may have peaked. The surprise resignation on Thursday of one of the party’s founders, 52-year-old political science professor Juan Carlos Monedero, threw the spotlight on party divisions ahead of regional and local elections on May 24, and a general election later in the year. Podemos’s first crisis since its 2014 foundation comes as center-right upstart Ciudadanos (Citizens) is stealing the confidence of voters who want to end the dominance of Spain’s two main parties, but who fear the hard left’s radical tone. “There are tensions at the heart of Podemos,” Monedero told an online radio station hours before he announced his surprise resignation.
