COTABATO CITY, Maguindanao: A South Cotabato provincial board member representing the lumad or highlanders as Indigenous People (IP) mandatory representative (IPMR) have asked the New People’s Army (NPA) to spare their children from communist ideology.
IPMR Fulong Edgar Sambong said after he took his oath of office as provincial council ex-officio member before South Cotabato Gov. Daisy Fuentes in Koronadal City recently.
Sambong also said he received reliable information from tribal leaders that the communist guerrillas have been recruiting IP minors to join the movement.
“I was told the NPAs have been taking advantage of IP minors’ lack of education and innocence in its recruitment activities to fight the government,” Sambong said.
Sambong, in raising the cause of IPs in South Cotabato’s hinterlands told the NPA, “Please spare the innocent Indigenous Peoples (IP) children from your ideological struggle.”
Recently, four communist guerrillas returned to the fold of the law. They belonged to IP communities in the province.
As this developed, Sambong urged tribal leaders to unite and have one voice in order to protect the rights and interest of indigenous peoples.
