    So secures solo lead in Calgary meet
    Filipino Grandmaster (GM) Wesley So grabbed the solo top spot after four rounds in the 2013 Cargary International Chess Classic being held at the Best Western Village Park Inn in Calgary, Canada. The 19-year-old So outclassed erstwhile co-leader GM Robin Van Kampen of the Netherlands in the fourth round to raise his score to 3.5 points on three wins and one draw.     Amit wins China Open 9-Ball opener
    Laos Southeast Asian Games double-gold medalist Rubilen Amit posted an opening 7-4 win over Chinese Han Fang in the women’s division of the 2013 China Open 9-Ball Championships being held at the Shanghai Pudong Yuanshen Stadium in Shanghai, China. Amit now has 1-0 card in Group H. She will next meet Fu Xiao-Fang of China in the tournament sanctioned by the World Pool-Billiard Association.

    Pinoy ‘poomsae’ artists bag more medals in Myanmar
    The Filipino jins added three silver and one bronze medals in the poomsae (form) event of the 2013 Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Tae kwon do Championships held at the Aung San Memorial Stadium in Yangon, Myanmar. The national squad got silver medals in the senior men’s team, junior female team and junior pair, and another bronze in the junior female individual in the event participated in by Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, Singapore, Indonesia, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.

    Nadal survives Gulbis test as top seeds cruise
    ROME: Defending champion Rafael Nadal endured a three-set thriller before overcoming big-hitting Latvian qualifier Ernests Gulbis 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 on Thursday to reach the Rome Masters quarterfinals. In the women’s event, world number one Serena Williams comfortably made the quarterfinals with a 6-0, 6-1 mauling of Slovakia’s 14th seed Dominika Cibulkova.

    Rutherford faces former champions in Shanghai
    SHANGHAI: British long jump hero Greg Rutherford, one of seven current Olympic Champions competing in Shanghai, will face 2008 Beijing gold medalist Irving Saladino and American Dwight Phillips, who won in Athens 2004 at the London 2012 Olympics at Shanghai’s Diamond League meet on Saturday.
