AUTHORITIES on Thursday dismantled squatter colonies inside the New Bilibid Prisons (NBP) that were situated near the perimeter walls.
Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Director General Ricardo Rainier Cruz 3rd said the structures were illegal and could possibly used to catch contraband being thrown over the fences.
With the help of some prisoners, BuCor personnel demolished about 20 shanties at about 5:30 a.m.
NBP Supt. Richard Schwarzkopf Jr. explained that the construction materials used to build the shanties were earlier requested by inmates for legitimate projects.
Apart from the demolition, the BuCor also conducted a shakedown at the maximum security compound’s Buildings 2, 5 and 11 in Quadrant 4.
From there, a raiding team confiscated prohibited items such as appliances, 70 sachets of suspected shabu, sex enhancers and an aquarium with tarantula.
The authorities also visited former quarters of so-called Bilibid “kings” Peter Co and Joel Capones, the two convicted drug lords who recently lost extravagant equipment in another raid.
Their rooms are now occupied by elderly inmates who need special care.
Dubbed as “Oplan Galugad,” the latest raid was the 14th since November last year.
