The Colegio de San Juan de Letran (CSJL) elicited a 1-1 draw from defending champions La Salle Greenhills (LSGH) in the elimination round of the juniors division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) football tournament at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium on Thursday.
John Roy Villasenor scored a goal in the 31st minute to give Letran a 1-0 lead at halftime.
The Greenies retaliated with consecutive raids but were foiled by Letran going into the second half. But LSGH’s relentless attacks resulted in penalty in the dying minutes of regulation.
Miguel Artillera scored via penalty spot in the second minute of stoppage time preventing Letran from absorbing a loss.
“Well, actually I’m very satisfied with their performance but I think we can still improve and this season we are really looking forward to reach the top four,” Squires head coach Xarex Velasquez told The Manila Times after the match.
He said his team now consists of more seasoned players and he expects better performance from his wards.
“Definitely, what we have right now is a better squad. Aside from the age, the skills and technical setup, my boys really improved from last season,” he added.
Meanwhile, San Beda College notched their second-straight victory in the tournament after dispatching Emilio Aguinaldo College, 7-0, in the second game of the day.
Vince Bailo and Miguel Pasion posted a brace performance each for the Red Cubs in their rout of the Brigadiers.
Christopher Villanueva, Nicola Abalos and Renan Roxas also made their presence felt by scoring a goal each in the 90-minute affair.
Lastly, the Lyceum of the Philippines University opened their campaign this season on a positive note by slipping past University of Perpetual Help System Dalta, 1-0.
Marlon Adova scored the lone goal for the Junior Pirates in the 21st minute.
