St. Benilde Blazers torch Cardinals in NCAA basketball

The College of Saint Benilde Blazers wasted an 18-point lead in the third quarter but managed to recover and post a 79-72 win over the Mapua Institute of Technology Cardinals on Friday in the 90th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) basketball tournament elimination round at the San Juan Arena.

Paolo Taha, Jonathan Grey and Roberto Bartolo Jr. combined for 12 points to lead the Blazers to its second win in five matches and foiling the Cardinals’ entry into the win column. Mapua remain winless in six outings.

Meanwhile, the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA (UPHSD) Altas will try to regain the solo second spot when they collide against the Arellano University Chiefs at 2:30 p.m. today while the UPSHD Altalettes face the Arellano Braves at 12 p.m. also at the San Juan Arena in San Juan City.

The erstwhile co-leader Altas dropped to the solo third spot after losing 61-62 to host Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers on Wednesday. Coach Aric del Rosario said that they’ve got to bounce back in today’s game. The San Beda College Red Lions, with a clean 5-0 slate, are still leading in the 10-team tourney.
