St. Benilde elicits draw from LPU

College of St. Benilde (CSB) bat-tled the gritty Lyceum of the Phil-ippines University (LPU) to a goalless draw to secure the top spot with a narrow lead in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Season 93 seniors football tournament on Monday night at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium in Manila.

Main man Daniel Liozo, Dean Ebarle and Vincent Lovitos both had a chance to score for the Blazers but goalkeeper Mellex Andes stood his ground to salvage the Pirates.

The unbeaten CSB slightly improved to seven points built on two wins and a draw, enough to surpass defending champion San Beda College on the pole position.

The idle Red Booters slid to No. 2 with six points on two blowout wins in as many games.

Lyceum, on the other hand, grabbed its first point following an opening game loss to Emilio Aguinaldo College (EAC).

In the curtain raiser, Roberto Corsame and Jerome Banasihan struck early in opposite halves to tow Arellano University to a 2-0 victory over the hard-luck Mapua University.

Corsame netted a goal just nine minutes into the game followed by Banasihan’s in the 47th minute as the Chiefs sealed their second win in two games for six points, solidifying their grip of the No. 3 spot.

The cellar-dwelling Cardinals remained winless in three matches.

In the tightly contested second game, Mark Alvin Cordero notched a goal in the final minute as University of Perpetual Help System DALTA forced a 2-2 stalemate with EAC.

Cordero’s last ditch effort helped the No. 5 Altas Booters seize their first point after dropping their first two assignments while the No. 4 Generals hiked their tally to four markers.
