THE San Sebastian College Stags kept their composure to post a slim 74-72 win over the College of Saint Benilde Blazers on Friday in the 90th National Collegiate Athletic Association basketball tournament at The San Juan Arena in San Juan City.
The Stags actually capitalized on a miss by Jonathan Grey of the Blazers in the dying seconds to notch their third win in four matches, while the Blazers slid at the bottom of the standings with the Mapua Cardinals who are also bearing a 0-3 card.
Coach Topex Robinson of San Sebastian praised his wards for their tenacity when the Blazers moved to within two points, 72-74, on Mark Romero’s split of a charity off a foul by Jon Ortuoste with still 40.5 seconds remaining.
Robinson was happy that the Stags bounced back well after a heartbreaking 79-82 defeat to the University of Perpetual Help System Dalta Altas on Saturday.
The Stags through the combined effort of Ortouste, Jaymar Perez and Bradwyn Guinto took an 11-point lead, 63-52, in the third period but Paulo Taha, Mark Romero and Raphael Nayve of the Blazers executed a quick 10-2 run to reduce the gap to only two points, 65-63.
Bradwyn Guinto lead the Stags with 13 points and 13 rebounds while Jaymar Perez finished with 15 points.
Meanwhile, four-peat champion San Beda College Red Lions try to regain solo leadership when they battle the Arellano Chiefs today at 2:30 p.m. The San Beda Red Cubs will also see action against the Arellano Braves in the secondary match set at 12 p.m.
The Red Lions of coach Boyet Fernandez are currently tied with Perpetual at the top spot with similar 3-0 win-loss slate and a win today will enable them to regain solo leadership while the Chiefs are also aiming to keep their 2-0 record.
