SAN Sebastian College-Recoletos Stags try to strengthen their hold of the fourth spot when they battle Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers while pacesetter San Beda College Red Lions seek for their 14th win on Monday in the 89th National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
The Stags of coach Topex Robinson are currently holding an 8-6 win-loss slate but they are being threatened by Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals, who are closely following with an 8-8 card.
A win today by the Stags over the Heavy Bombers would move them just a win up over the Generals, which is not yet safe because they can still be overtaken. They need to win at least three of their remaining four matches to assure themselves of a Final Four slot.
Robinson’s team will collide against the Heavy Bombers at 6 p.m. while the defending titlist Red Lions take on cellar dweller Mapua Institute of Technology Cardinals at 4 p.m.
In the junior matches, reigning champion San Beda Red Cubs try to protect their unbeaten 15-0 slate as they meet Mapua Red Robins at 12 noon while the San Sebastian Staglets seek for their 12th win against three losses when they face Jose Rizal Light Bombers at 2 p.m.
With just few games left in the double round elimination, the four-peat seeking Red Lions (13-2) are already assured of a Final Four slot along with Letran Knights (12-3) and University of Perpetual Help Altas (11-5).
Thus only the fourth spot remain open for the Stags (8-6), EAC Generals (8-8), Jose Rizal Bombers (6-8), College of St. Benilde Blazers (5-10), Arellano Chiefs (6-9) and Lyceum Pirates (5-10).
So far only Mapua Cardinals bowed out of contention with a poor 1-14 record.
