Stallion FC and reigning champions Ceres La Salle ended their campaign in the elimination round of the United Football League (UFL) Cup 2016 on top of their respective groups.
After five games, Stallion FC topped Group A with an unblemished record and 15 points while Ceres La Salle topped Group B with four wins and a loss.
The Stallions in their first game posted a 1-0 win over defending champions Kaya FC followed by a 4-0 drubbing of Agila MSA FC. The squad escaped with a slim 2-1 victory over JP Voltes FC. The Stallions, under coach Ernie Nierras, notched their biggest win in the group stage with a 9-1 rout of Forza FC.
The club posted another resounding victory against Laos FC, 4-1, on March 5.
Meanwhile, Bacolod’s Ceres La Salle FC was unable to finish strong in their group after losing to archrival Global FC, 2-1, in their last game in the first round.
With the loss, the Busmen finished the group stage tied with Global FC with 12 points but edged the latter by a total of 14 points in goal difference to emerge as the top seed of the group.
Ceres blazed through Nomads FC, Pasargad FC, Green Archers United FC and Loyola FC before losing to Global in Group B.
Consequently, Kaya FC together with JP Voltes FC and Forza FC have all made the cut to enter the quarterfinals in Group A. Global, Loyola Meralco Sparks and Green Archers United entered the quarterfinals in Group B.
There will be no matches until April 2 to give way to the games of the Azkals and the Asian Football Confederation Cup matches of Ceres and Kaya.
