GMA Network—through its international channels GMA Pinoy TV, GMA Life TV, and GMA News TV International—successfully celebrated the country’s 115th Independence Day by holding exciting and well-received key events in various cities organized in partnership with different Filipino-American and Filipino-Canadian groups and communities.

The Kapuso float for the Philippine Independence Day Celebration in New York, organized by the Philippine Independence Day Council, drew the most attention for it was the only one that had a sound system, blasting the catchy Kapuso jingle composed especially for that occasion. No less than noted choreographer Geleen Eugenio crafted the jingle’s dance sequences that 30 dancers performed all throughout the parade.

The dancers preceded the float, which had Indio lead star, Senator Ramon “Bong” Revilla, together with two of Temptation of Wife’s lead stars Marian Rivera and Rafael Rosell. Also joining them was multi-platinum recording artist, Julie Anne San Jose.

In California, the state with the largest population of Filipino-Americans, two truly commemorative events were held. The first one was the Philippine Cultural Committee Pista sa Nayon in Vallejo. This particular celebration had the whole community participating in a first-of-its-kind historical-cultural parade. The highlight of the program was titled, “Kasaysayan ng Lahi,” which noted journalist, Greg Macabenta helped to mount.

“The Kasaysayan ng Lahi historical-cultural parade, ‘The Story of our Race,’ is my small contribution, and that of GMA International and the Seafood City Family of Companies to this process of engendering among our youth, a greater appreciation of the history of our Motherland.”

The Fil-Am youths thanked GMA for connecting them to their roots, through the presentation, which included prime time stars Dennis Trillo and Glaiza de Castro.

Carson City had an equally wonderful celebration. The steady flow of events saw Rafael Rosell and Marian Rivera welcomed warmly at the airport by awaiting fans. They had dinner with Mayor Jim Dear along with GMA International representatives.

Commending GMA Network’s participation in their Philippine Independence Day Celebrations, Marian, Rafael and GMA International received several awards including, a US Senate Award of Merit and Recognition; US House of Representatives Award of Merit; California Legislative Assembly Award of Recognition; City Council of Carson Award of Merit; and the Philippine Independence Day Foundation Award of Recognition.

Busy as ever, Dennis and Glaiza hopped on a plane for another round of performances at the Seattle Center. “I am very pleased by the success of Pagdiriwang 2013, especially with the help of the sponsorship of GMA Network,” said JP Paredes, President of Filipino Cultural Heritage Society in Washington, the event’s organizing body.

Glaiza then graced the Philippine American Friendship Parade and Festival, and gave a stellar performance at an event on West Side Avenue and Lincoln Park in Jersey City. Food, music and booths with Filipino offerings added much color to the whole-day festival. The Philippine American Friendship Day Committee presented plaques of appreciation to Glaiza and GMA International for their participation in Jersey City’s celebrations.

Not to be left behind, Filipinos in Toronto, Canada also had a Pinoy fiesta and trade show, with outstanding performances by Dennis, Rafael Rosell and Glaiza who thrilled adoring fans. The show was made possible by GMA International’s partnership with the Philippine Canadian Charitable Foundation and the Philippine Chambers of Commerce Toronto.

In all these cities around the world, GMA International helped to ignite among overseas Filipinos a deep sense of nationality, even among the younger generation who had never been to the Philippines. It is truly an achievement, especially with numerous parents asking the organizers, “What have you done with our children? They know more about Philippine history than we do!”

Indeed, entertainment continues to be a powerful tool in keeping Filipino pride alive and well around the world.
