In a country where politics and show business go hand in hand, it is no longer a surprise when actors, athletes and entertainers decide to cash in on their popularity and jump into the political bandwagon.
Leading the list of personalities and celebrities set to run next year is world boxing champion and Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao who will run for senator.
Another prominent celebrity-politician who hopes to be re-elected is Sen. Vicente “Tito” Sotto 3rd – the leader of the comedy trio Tito, Vic and Joey whose popularity soared courtesy of the decades-old noontime show, Eat Bulaga. Sotto leads in pre-election senatorial preference surveys in both the Social Weather Stations and Pulse Asia.
Cavite Rep. Lani Mercado and son, Cavite Vice Gov. Jolo Revilla will also be in the running. Mercado will aspire for the Bacoor city mayoralty while Revilla will seek reelection. Their patriarch, Sen. Ramon Bong Revilla, who is in jail and facing trial for plunder, had dropped hints that he was supposed to eye a higher position.
Another mother and son tandem is Alma Moreno and Vandolph Quizon. Moreno – one of the most popular sexy stars in the late 1970s to the early 1980s, is president of the Philippine Councilors League. She is reportedly running for senator under the United Nationalist Alliance of Vice President Jejomar Binay. Vandolph, her son with the late comedy king Dolphy, will vie for a council seat in Parañaque City as Moreno’s replacement. Moreno’s estranged husband, Joey Marquez, was a former mayor of Parañaque City. Marquez’s son, Jeremy, an incumbent councilor, will try to level up by running for vice mayor of the city.
Outgoing Senator Lito Lapid is reportedly running for mayor of Angeles City while his son, Mark will try his luck in the senatorial race. Mark, a former governor of Pampanga, is chairman of the Tourism Infrastructure and Economic Zone Authority.
E.R. Ejercito, after his highly publicized fall out of office, will try to regain his seat as Laguna governor in the coming election.
Another political stalwart from Laguna, actress Angelica Jones, is looking forward to start her campaign as Liberal Party’s bet for vice governor in Laguna.
Lawyer to the stars Lorna Kapunan, who became a household name thanks to her celebrity clients like Coco Martin, Marjorie and Julia Barretto, James Yap, and Hayden Kho, will try to make it to the Senate under the ticket of independent presidential candidate Grace Poe, daughter of the late action king Fernando Poe Jr. and veteran actress Susan Roces.
