Stellar Pinay golfer Cyna Rodriguez eyes No.1

Cyna Rodriguez made waves in 2015 after becoming the first Filipina to break into the LPGA Tour in 15 years via a fourth place finish in the Final LPGA Qualifying School at the LPGA International Hills Course in Florida, United States. Rodriguez, a former Philippine Ladies Open champion, also has a number of amateur titles in the country and abroad under her belt.

The accomplished lady golfer tells The Manila Times the evolution of her golf career.

The Manila Times: How did you get into golf?
Cyna Rodriguez: My father plays golf and he would drag me during the weekends when I was around 10 years old to hit balls on the range.

TMT: Why did you choose golf?
CR: I love the mental aspect of the game. You are competing against yourself and everything you do is up to you. Your attitude also plays a big part of your game.

TMT: Why do you think female golfers are more successful than their male counterparts in Asia?
CR: I think it’s more difficult to compete at a men’s caliber. There are a lot more male golfers compared to female golfers.

TMT: Is there gender bias in golf?
CR: Yes, definitely. The PGA tour has a bigger purse than LPGA. I would love to see more people watch female golfers play.

TMT: How do you prepare for competition?
CR: I do yoga almost everyday to keep my muscles loose and to keep myself flexible. On off weeks, I usually hit the gym to lift weights working on my arms and legs. I do boxing too for transition and explosion.

TMT: Which part of being a competitive golfer you love most?
CR: Traveling to different countries, meeting new people, and learning about their cultures.

TMT: What is your most memorable victory?
CR: Junior World 2006. I was unsure that I wanted to play golf full time and winning that tournament made me realize that I am actually pretty good at this sport.

TMT: Do you have other interests outside of golf?
CR: A lot. I love boxing and wake skating. I used to play a lot of basketball when I was younger.

TMT: What do you hope you achieve in your career?
CR: Be the No.1 golfer in the world and help develop the sport in the Philippines.

TMT: Which golfer do you admire most?
CR: Rory McIlroy. His timing is exceptional.
