Everything begins with a vision. How the world is created is greatly dependent on what we aspire it to be. In today’s ever changing landscape, the younger generation is veering away from a herd and pushing themselves towards intricacies that promote unity in diversity.

Gone were the days when being alike was the norm as youth today choose to use social media to scelebrate their differences. Moreover, they create brands that prove just how talented their generation is, filled with artists who grew up with an insatiable desire to change the world.

This is the truth of The Starving Artist. Founded by Bryan Sochayseng and Kathrina Crisostomo, they describe their venture as, “A brand that sings and hails for all the striving artists out there where everything is bleak and seeks fulfillment for their creative mind that never stops to tinker.”

The Starving Artist is a “cut and sew” street wear brand that marries functionality, art, and design.

“Our whole message is ‘by, for’ which is by artist for artists by bringing all of those elements that an artist or creative wants and needs and merges that with clothing. Inspiration-wise, it was more of a lack of it,” Kathrina described.

Kathrina then goes on to say that they created The Starving Artist to provide what was lacking in the current market—available options that suited what artists needed.

Bryan—who is an illustrator and a former dancer—joined forces with Kathrina, a video blogger, makeup artist and cook, to create a line that would later on become a platform for artists.

“We want The Starving Artist to be able to instill our message into others. We have a lot to say as people and members of society with a developing platform and we hope we can inspire people through what we have to say. It’s a line dedicated to an artist who would like to share their voices and for their clothes to speak about who they are,” Kahtrina shared.

The line is extremely personal for Bryan and Kathrina and admits that what sets their label apart are the ‘personal touches’ included in each piece, “We want The Starving Artist to be able to instill our message into others. We have a lot to say as people and members of society with a developing platform and we hope we can inspire people through what we have to say. We like adding personal touches that we hand-make ourselves into the clothing such as the custom paintings on the back of our mural jacket from the first collection. We really like putting ourselves into the collection and that’s really what sets us apart.”

When asked how they wish to inspire their generation, both Bryan and Kathrina agreed, “We’ve had a difficult time developing this brand and bringing it to what it is and what we want it to be. We didn’t know how to sew, we didn’t have funds, and we didn’t have a manufacturer, either.

“And as the brand says itself, we’re there to support those who are trying to push their art out there, despite not having the resources, whatever it may be. So, continue your craft and you’ll have your time.”
