• Still no word on NPC support to Grace, Chiz

Monday, support of the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) to the tandem of Sen. Grace Poe and Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero has not been officially announced.
The day was the start of filing of certificates of candidacy for the 2016 elections.

Quezon Rep. Mark Enverga, NPC spokesman, said his party has not yet come up with an official position on whether the party will really support the candidacies of Poe for President and Escudero for Vice President, or any other candidates for the two top positions for that matter.

The NPC’s support is believed to be extremely needed by Poe and Escudero since being independent candidates are not enough to win the national elections.

Enverga and even another NPC spokesman, Valenzuela City (Metro Manila) Mayor Rexlon Gatchalian, earlier said the party will likely support Poe and Escudero but could not announce it formally since consultations with party members are ongoing.

Media reports also mentioned that NPC founder and chairman emeritus, Eduardo “Danding” Cojuangco, would throw his support behind the two supposedly because they are popular and can win.

Enverga said the NPC decided on two things on Sunday.

One was the approval of the NPC leadership that two of its members, Sen. Vicente Sotto 3rd and Valenzuela City Rep. Sherwin Gatchalian, will run for the Senate.

Two was the support to the senatorial bid of Bayan Muna Rep. Neri Colmenares.
Colmenares, official candidate of Koalisyong Makabayan, will run under the Poe-Escudero ticket.

Other than the support to Sotto, Gatchalian and Colmenares, the NPC has not made any decision yet, specifically on who to support for President and Vice President, Enverga said.

The NPC spokesman, who is on his last term as congressman of Quezon, said he will run for governor of the province.
