‘Stop mining in Tampakan to end spate of killings’

End impunity! This was the strong demand of an alliance of non-governmental organizations to the Aquino administration so that the killings of eight B’laans, including two children, would be the last victims allegedly of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP). Father Gillarme Joy Pelino, spokesman of Tampakan Forum, said the alliance strongly believes that the series of killings will continue to persist unless the mining project of Sagittarius Mining Inc. (SMI) is cancelled and pulled out from Tampakan. Tampakan, which is found at the boundary of South Cotabato, Saranggni, Davao del Sur, Sultan Kudarat, is a place where the B’laan indigenous peoples group have been living for a very long period of time. The AFP unit that operates in the area is the 27th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army. Pelino said a total of eight individuals, including, including two children, have been killed in the area since 2012.
