VICE President Jejomar Binay on Friday asked the public to pray harder to save a Filipino who is scheduled to be executed in Saudi Arabia.
Binay, Presidential Adviser on overseas Filipino workers’ (OFW) Concerns said, Filipinos should pray unceasingly that Joselito Zapanta, would be given another extension in paying his blood money.
“It’s already November and we still have to raise a big amount. We need to double our prayers for Joselito and his family,” he said.
Binay noted that unlike Rodelio “Dondon” Lanuza, an OFW who was recently freed from the death row, Zapanta is in a more difficult situation as the Saudi king has not shouldered the balance of the blood money.
Zapanta was sentenced to death for killing a Sudanese in 2009.
Out of his four million riyals or about P45-million blood money, his family and the Philippine government were able to raise only 520,831 riyals.
The deadline for the settlement of the blood money is on November 3.
Meanwhile, Lanuza’s blood money was three million riyals.
The Philippine government and supporters of Lanuza paid 700,000 riyals while Saudi King Abdullah shouldered the remaining 2.3 million.
“Our staff at the Philippine embassy in Saudi, together with the Sudanese embassy, are doing their best to save Joselito,” Binay said.
“Let’s hope he will be given an extension or his blood money will be lessened,” he added.
