The number of stray bullet victims has risen to 28 in different parts of the country which include two toddlers, Philippine National Police (PNP) spokesman Senior Supt. Wilben Mayor said on Thursday.
Mayor identified the six latest victims, which occurred on the first day of the year, as Martin Cadampog, 42, Tubod, Iligan City, hit on the left side of the forehead; Margareth Diane Vocal, 2, Pasig City, has minor injury forehead; Sheila Daluyo, 23, Pres. Roxas, Capiz, hit in right leg; Jhonny Fadrogane, 34, Dao, Capiz, hit lower right leg; Carmen Samson, 50, Rosario, batngas, hit in right leg; and Jahred Stephan Bitacora,2 , Mabini, Aplaya, Digos City, hit in left hand
He said the still lone fatality of stray bullet incidents, as Baby Von Alexander, of Caoayan, Ilocos Sur, was hit in the head while sleeping.
Mayor also said that 130 people were injured from firecrackers.
The PNP spokesman added that 13,692 illegal firecrackers worth P1.36 million were confiscated.
Mayor said their IWAS PAPUTOK/DISGRASYA campaign has netted 37 violators due to possession, use or sale of illegal firecrackers and unauthorized discharged of firearms.
He said that of this number, 15 were arrested due to unauthorized discharged of firearms which include four policemen, two security guards, one from Armed Forces of the Philippines and from law enforcement agency (LEA) and the rest were civilians.
In the previous New Year celebration, Mayor said the PNP recorded 40 stray bullet cases from Dec. 16, 2012 to January 2, 2013.
One of the victims was eight-year-old Stephanie Nicole Ella, who was killed by a stray bullet while watching firecrackers in their neighborhood in Caloocan City. PNA
