TOKYO: A powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake hit northeastern Japan on Tuesday, triggering a one-meter (3.3-foot) tsunami wave that crashed into the coast at the stricken Fukushima nuclear power plant.
Public broadcaster NHK urged residents in the region to "flee immediately" to high ground, reminding listeners to heed the lessons of the "Great East Japan Earthquake".
