Strong quake hits China and PNG


BEIJING: A 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck China’s northwestern province of Qinghai on Monday, the US Geological Survey reported, in an area frequently plagued with seismic activity.

Also on Monday, a 6.9 magnitude quake struck off Papua New Guinea, some 6,260 kilometers southeast.

The quake in China’s sparsely-populated area of Yushu prefecture was 32 kilometers deep while that off PNG was 35 kilometers deep estimated at a depth of 35 kilometres on New Britain island, 418 kilometers northeast of the capital Port Moresby, the United States Geological Survey said.

No casualty and damage is likely in either places.
