THE chiefs of Japan and Philippine armed forces renewed their commitment for stronger military cooperation and partnerships in humanitarian assistance and disaster response (HADR).
Admiral Katsutoshi Kawano, Chief of Staff of the Japan Self-Defense Forces visited Armed Forces chief Hernando Iriberri on Wednesday.
Early this year, Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin signed with Japan’s Minister of Defense Gen. Nakatani a Memorandum on Defense Cooperation and Exchanges meant to provide a framework for defense cooperation between the two defense ministries and their respective armed forces.
Both the Philippines and Japan are in dispute with China over the West Philippines Sea (South China Sea).
Kawano is in the country to observe the activities under the Pacific Partnership 2015 (PP15).
Pacific Partnership is an annual humanitarian and civic assistance exercise aimed at strengthening international relationships with partner and host nations in the Asia-Pacific Regions. This year, it started in May and will end in September.
