New Sports+Action channel launched today

ABS-CBN’s alternative free TV channel, Studio 23, went on air for the last time Friday night to make way for an all-new sports destination for Filipino fans, set to roll out today.

Dubbed “ABS-CBN Sports+Action,” the channel will be dedicated to action-packed local and international sporting events, with the aim of airing a varied range of games and competitions live as they happen.

Among these are coverages of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), the Azkals, Top Rank fights, ALA Boxing, the National Basketball Association (NBA), the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), and the FIFA World Cup.

Interestingly, only two programs from Studio 23 have been kept in Sports+Action’s line-up: Anthony Taberna’s nightly news program, re-titled News+ from the successful Iba Balita; and FPJ Hari ng Aksyon, which features the late King of Philippine Movie’s legendary body of work for the cinema.

“There was no way we could pull out FPJ’s movies from the new channel because of his huge following,” March Ventosa, ABS-CBN Narrowcast head revealed to The Manila Times. “He is after all the king of action.”

As for Taberna—who also confessed to The Manila Times that while he loves basketball, the game doesn’t seem to love him back—there is certainly a place for his kind of news reporting on the sporting channel. He is quick-witted and hard-hitting be it on radio or TV, and thus will also deliver an action packed show for sports buffs albeit in news and current affairs.

Let the games begin!
