POLICE have arrested at least three ambulant vendors after an undetermined number of students suf-fered from food poisoning on Friday morning after eating candies they sold in Cagwait town in Surigao del Sur, police reports said on Friday.
Reports reaching the PNP national operations center in Camp Crame identified the suspects as Junnil Teriote Martinez, 30; John Dequila Oben, 36 and Joel Alferez Paja all are residents of Calinan, Davao City.
The reports said the suspects reportedly sold Durian Candies labeled as “Wendy’s” to several students in Cagwait town early Friday morning.
According to a report from DZMM TeleRadyo, the suspected candies were found in different schools in Cagwait town and Tandag City.
In Cagwait alone, around 100 students from six schools were accounted for, said Grace Barcena-Tranquilan Philippine Information Agency Surigao del Sur infocen manager.
Some of the students came from Aras-asan Elementary School, Cagwait Central Elementary School, Unidad National High School, Jose Sanvictores Sr. National High School, Cempron Elementary School and Surigao del Sur State University-Cagwait Campus.
In Tandag City, Tranquilan said, 75 students from Jacinto P. Elpa National High School were taken to a treatment center while some were brought to the Adela Serra Ty Memorial Medical Center.
She added that two patients are confined at the Marihatag District Hospital.
The police and health authorities are now conducting a deeper probe into the incident.
