Suspects in rampage arrested

CAMP DIEGO SILANG, La Union: The police manhunt team arrested a 65-year-old father and his three sons while hiding in Barangay Dulong Bayan, San Jose del Monte, Bulacan Thursday morning.

The four allegedly killed five of their relatives and wounded three others on Tuesday, shortly after they all came together to bury another relative.

Chief Insp. Artemio Infante, Agoo police chief, said suspects Eduardo Gayo, 65, and sons Demetrio, Noel and Ferdinand will be charged with multiple murder and frustrated murder for the killing of victims Reynaldo Refuerzo and his 3-year old daughter Mary Anne, Gil Cabilitazan, Zosimo Fontanilla and Gilberto Cecilio.

The initial investigation showed that a long-standing dispute about an orchard, which was taken care of by the family of the victims, caused the killing spree.

Infante said his unit immediately coordinated with the Bulacan Police Station after learning that suspects Eduardo, Demetrio and Noel went to Bulacan to hide in a house where the siblings’ sister worked as a domestic help.

Suspect Ferdinand was caught hiding in a cave at a mountainous area in barangay Capas yesterday with the Agoo police, SWAT men and barangay tanods doing a manhunt operation.

When interrogated, suspect Noel, who is said to be the gunman, claimed that the killing was an act of self-defense adding that the victims taunted them. He also denied using a gun to kill his relatives.

The body of victim Zosimo Fontanilla was brought to his hometown in Candon City, according to his live-in partner Teresita Dulatre.

The three-year-old victim Mary Anne and his uncle Reynaldo were brought home to Taguig Thursday morning.
