Sy, whose business owns the SM malls, became richer by $1.7 billion as his net worth has reached $14.4 billion.

Forbes compiles the net wealth of the country’s richest based on stock prices and exchange rates, with the value of private companies based on similar companies that are publicly traded.

Placing second is industrialist John Gokongwei Jr. whose increase in net worth to $5.5 billion pulled him up from 4th place last year while Andrew Tan–who owns the McDonald’s franchise in the country–moved to 3rd spot with his net worth valued at $4.5 billion.

Lucio Tan and Enrique Razon Jr. ranked 4th and 5th with their respective net worth pegged at $4.3 billion and $4.1 billion.

Making the top 10 are: George Ty ($4 billion); Aboitiz family ($3.6 billion);
Jaime Zobel de Ayala and family ($3.5 billion); David Consunji ($3.2 billion); and Tony Tan Caktiong ($2.2 billion).

  1. contractualization is what Sy makes him rich… they should pay the employee 4x the basic salary if they are under contract..
