MANILA Archbishop Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle, the newly-elected president of the charity arm of the Roman Catholic Chuch, appealed to the faithful to “bring Caritas (Latin word for love) to the neighborhood and streets.”
At the closing of the 20th Caritas Internationalis General Assembly in Rome, Tagle said the poor get ravaged by typhoons and earthquakes in the form of poverty, corruption, injustice and human trafficking.
“Everyday there’s a storm of poverty; everyday there’s an earthquake of corruption, injustice, and human trafficking that devastates the dignity of man. That’s why Caritas should be in places where people live, in the neighborhood, in the streets,” he added in Filipino.
Tagle is the first Asian to be elected president of Caritas Internationalis.
He addressed the over 400 delegates from 165 member-countries of Caritas Internationalis on the last day of the general assembly in Rome last Sunday.
Tagle was in the US when delegates cast their ballots on Thursday.
