• Tail end teams collide today

TEAMS at the bottom of the standing face each other today as they scramble for better positions in the 89th National Collegiate Athletic Association basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.

The Mapua Institute of Technology Cardinals, carrying a 1-6 card, face host College of Saint Benilde Blazers (2-5) at 4 p.m. while the Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals and Arellano University Chiefs, two teams sharing the sixth to 8th spot with similar 2-5 win-loss slates part ways at 6 p.m.

The junior matches pit Mapua Red Robins against Saint Benilde-LSGH Greenies at 12 noon and EAC Brigadiers against Arellano Braves at 2 p.m.

Letran’s setback to University of Perpetual Help Altas, 66-80, on Thursday caused a tight race among the five teams in the upper half of the standing. The previously unbeaten Letran is now locked with defending titlist San Beda Red Lions at the top with identical 7-1 record followed by the UPHSD Altas with 6-2, Jose Rizal Heavy Bombers at solo fourth with 5-3 and San Sebastian College Stags at solo fifth with 4-4.

As the league approaches the second round of the elimination, it is important for Mapua, Saint Benilde, Arellano, EAC Generals and Lyceum Pirates (2-6) to improve their positions.
