Filipino Grandmaster (GM) Wesley So battles GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France in the ninth round when the 2015 Tata Steel Chess Tournament resumes in Wijk aan Zee, Netherlands.
So and Vachier-Lagrave are in a three-way tie for second with GM Ding Liren of China. They have 5.5 points each, just half a point behind solo leader World champion GM Magnus Carlsen of Norway (6.0 points).
The 21-year-old So is coming off a 26-move victory over GM Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine in the eighth round.
He also defeated GM defending champion GM Levon Aronian of Armenia and GM Baadur Jobava of Georgia, and split the point with Carlsen, GM Teimour Radjabov of Azerbaijan, GM Fabiano Caruana of Italy, GM Radoslaw Wojtaszek of Poland and world champion Hou Yifan of China.
After facing Vachier-Lagrave, So will be meeting Ding in the 10th, GM Ivan Saric of Croatia in 11th, GM Anish Giri of the Netherlands in 12th and GM Loek Van Wely of the Netherlands in the final round.
The other ninth-round pairings are Carlsen versus Radjabov, Giri versus Ding, Wojtaszek versus Ivanchuk, Caruana versus Hou, Saric versus Van Wely, and Aronian versus Jobava.
