The Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws handed the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA (UPHSD) Altas their first loss, 62-57, in the FilOil Flying V Pre-season Premier Cup at the San Juan Arena on Friday.
The reigning University of Athletic Association of the Philippines basketball champion ended the four-game winning streak of the Altas behind the prowess of Rey Bienes who tallied a total of 10 points on an 83 percent shooting performance from the field in addition to a rebound and an assist.
FEU, after a slow first period left the Altas behind by six points, 15-9, going into the second quarter.
The wards of coach Nash Racela managed to sustain their offensive throughout the match, beefing up their lead to as much as 14 points, 49-35, at the end of the third quarter.
The Altas fought hard in the fourth but their effort fell short of stopping the Tamaraws.
Big man Prinze Orizu fortified the team’s defense with three crucial blocks together with his seven points and eight rebounds.
Wendell Comboy and Steve Holmqvist contributed eight points each.
Perpetual’s record has dropped to 4-1 while the Tamaraws’ improved to 2-3 in the elimination round.
Meanwhile, the Arellano University (AU) Chiefs trounced the San Sebastian College Recoletos Golden Stags, 80-78, in the first game.
The Chiefs relied on a late-game surge to overtake the Stags and bounce back from their loss to the Perpetual Altas in their last outing.
Michael Salado stepped up in the absence of AU star guard and Gilas cadet Jiovanni Jalalon with 18 points plus nine assists and four rebounds.
Donald Gumaru contributed 16 points including four three pointers while Bylle Meca and Allen Enriquez chipped in 10 markers each.
Forward Michael Calisaan led the Stags with 19 points.
With the win, Arellano now holds a record of four wins and a loss in Group A while San Sebastian’s win-loss card dropped to 2-3.
