Far Eastern University (FEU) shoots for a second win when it tackles defending champion Ateneo de Manila University today in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Season 76 men’s basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
The Tamaraws collide with the Blue Eagles at 4 p.m. while University of the Philippines (UP) takes on De La Salle University at 2 p.m.
FEU is in a four-way tie on top with fellow opening-game winners National University (NU), Adamson University and University of Santo Tomas (UST) while Ateneo, UP, La Salle and University of the East occupy the bottom half with 0-1 cards.
The Tamaraws debuted this season with an 89-78 win over the Red Warriors on Saturday.
“It was a good win but I need to remind them that we’re just starting. We need to be consistent,” said FEU coach Nash Racela, who will once again rely on dynamic duo Terrence Romeo and Ryan Roose Garcia.
Romeo had 23 points and 12 assists while Garcia got 18 points, three rebounds and three assists.
Ateneo, for its part, is raring to get back on track after absorbing a stunning 54-64 loss from NU on Sunday.
Injured Kiefer Ravena saw action for eight minutes and delivered just a couple of points, leaving the scoring cudgels to Juami Tiongson, Ryan Buenafe, Nico Elorde and rookie Chris Newsome. Tiongson had 13 while Buenafe and Elorde nailed 10 each, and Newsome chipped in nine and 10 rebounds.
“It’s important for our team to stay the course. This is going to be a tough season for us. We know our limitations. However, these should not deter us from trying to achieve a goal which we know we can accomplish,” said Ateneo head coach Bo Perasol.
On the other hand, UP and La Salle are aiming to notch their first win after succumbing to Adamson (79-67) and UST (58-63 overtime), respectively.
